Google Downplays Goobuntu Linux Rumor Google OS Goobuntu |
U.S. Internet search firm Google is denying that it has plans to distribute a version of the Linux-based operating system Ubuntu. Developed by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Internet security company Thawte Consulting, Ubuntu is an open-source operating system that could compete with Microsoft's Windows XP. Thawte is now owned by VeriSign. Google was responding to press reports suggesting that it would release a version of Ubuntu called Goobuntu. "We use Ubuntu internally, but have no plans to distribute it outside of the company," said Google spokesperson Sonya Boralv. While Goobuntu has no meaning, Ubuntu is a term found in several African languages. It means "humanity to other people."

Google Software
Despite Google's denial of any plans to enter the operating-system market, press reports have taken the rumor seriously, encouraged by recent Google software releases that compete with Microsoft products.
"Google is already challenging many of Microsoft's service offerings, such as MSN," said Frost & Sullivan analyst Mukul Krishna. "Now Google is reportedly getting in to the operating systems space. If it does launch Goobuntu, it will be going head to head with Microsoft in the software arena."
Krishna said that Google's launch of Google Pack last month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was a significant move. Google Pack includes Google Talk, Google Desktop, the Mozilla Firefox Web browser, the Trillian instant-messenger program, RealPlayer, and the Picasa photo-management tool.
"We (analysts) had thought Google might enter the software market in maybe four years, but it seems to be happening faster than this," said Krishna.
China Potential
"This is a very interesting development, because if Google prices Goobuntu at a price that is lower than Microsoft charges for Windows XP, it will get a lot of people using Goobuntu," Krishna said.
"If the price is really low, say $20, then tech-savvy people in countries like India and China would really take to Goobuntu. I could see people there buying low-cost computers then loading Goobuntu onto them."
Krishna dismissed speculation that Google would offer Goobuntu free of charge. "I think Google will charge for the product, even though, until now, its business model has been to charge advertisers, not end users," he said. "But I think the price will be nominal -- you will get a lot of people buying the software as they want to try it out. I personally would be interested in running it."
Microsoft Challenge
According to Krishna, Google is becoming Microsoft's biggest thorn in the flesh. "It can afford to spend a lot of money on software development; it has a very talented group of developers and is also hiring talented software engineers from Microsoft," he said.
"Microsoft is seen by many computer users as the establishment, while Google is seen as 'hip' and anti-establishment," said Krishna. "If Google gets involved with Linux, it will really build its credentials as the 'poster child' for anti-Microsoft computer users."
Krishna said that one of the problems with open-source software is that it is usually free, which means developers work on the software only in their spare time. "But if Google invests its development dollars in open-source software, it can speed up time to market," he said.
