When a group of women are abducted in the wintry hills of rural
Virginia, the only clues to their disappearance are the grotesque human
remains that begin to turn up in snow banks along the highway. With
officials desperate for any lead, a disgraced priest's questionable
visions send local police on a wild goose chase and straight to a
bizarre secret medical experiment that may or may not be connected to
the women's disappearance. Its a case right out of The X-Files. But the
FBI closed down its investigations into the paranormal years ago. And
the best team for the job is ex-agents Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully,
who have no desire to revisit their dark past. Still, the truth of
these horrific crimes is out there somewhere...and it will take Mulder
and Scully to find it!

Symantec confident users will see beyond cost of Norton 360
|
As Symantec Corp. launched its new Norton 360 consumer security suite today, the company acknowledged that some users may be put off by the price, nearly double the list price of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Live OneCare. "There will definitely be some price sensitivity" on the part of users, said Mark Kanok, 360's product marketing manager. "But the breadth and execution of Norton 360's functionality is greater [than OneCare's]. And I don't think anyone should undersell the intelligence of users."

Memory maker turbocharges Ram to 1302MHz
|
A Silicon Valley memory manufacturer plans to unveil what it claims to be the world's fastest memory modules at next week's Consumer Electronics Show. Patriot Memory said that it will be featuring working displays of the 1302MHz Extreme Performance PC2-10100 module. The models are over-clocked DDR-2 modules. DDR-2 chips normally operate at speeds of 667-800MHz. Although Patriot's new modules may be the fastest, the act of over-clocking a memory module is hardly a technological breakthrough, according to Nam Hyung-Kim, director and principal analyst at research firm iSuppli.

Microsoft Releases PhotoSynth 3D Tool
|
Microsoft on Thursday released a technology preview of an application it previewed in July, which is capable of taking hundreds of photographs and building a three-dimensional model in which users can "fly" through like a virtual world. The program, called PhotoSynth, was first announced at SIGGRAPH 2006. Microsoft describes it as "a hybrid of a slide show and a gaming experience that lets the viewer zoom in to see greater detail or zoom out for a more expansive view."

Napster for sale
|
Napster, which started its life as an illegal MP3 sharing service created by a college student in Visual Basic has evolved into a $100 million plus corporation. Despite the vast increase in revenue, the company is still losing money according to Napster's financials. Napster's subscription model, which differs from Apple iTunes pay per song model, still revolves around the fact that the profit margins are incredibly slim. As more competitors enter the market, Napster is now looking for a partner or to sell out entirely according to an article on Ars Technica.

Microsoft Zune Microsoft Explains its Strategy
|
Speaking here just now on Microsoft's Redmond campus, Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment & Devices Division, explained the strategy behind the company's planned Zune media devices and services -- the company's forthcoming iPod and iTunes challengers. Bach cautioned the audience of financial analysts that the project will require an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars over the next few years. He didn't show one of the portable players, or go into a lot of detail about the hardware or software. But he did explain the company's reasoning and put Zune in the context of the other things Microsoft is doing.

Google Downplays Goobuntu Linux Rumor Google OS Goobuntu
|
U.S. Internet search firm Google is denying that it has plans to distribute a version of the Linux-based operating system Ubuntu. Developed by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Internet security company Thawte Consulting, Ubuntu is an open-source operating system that could compete with Microsoft's Windows XP. Thawte is now owned by VeriSign. Google was responding to press reports suggesting that it would release a version of Ubuntu called Goobuntu. "We use Ubuntu internally, but have no plans to distribute it outside of the company," said Google spokesperson Sonya Boralv. While Goobuntu has no meaning, Ubuntu is a term found in several African languages. It means "humanity to other people."
